Independent Non-Inflecting Words

General Rule 5

Main Rule

Adverbs, Adnominals (連体詞れんたいし) and Conjunctions (接続詞 せつぞくし ) attach the final syllable as okurigana.

Examples:

 更 少 既 再 全 最
 去
  但

Exceptions

(1) The following words are written as shown.

あかくる おおいに ただちに ならびに しくは

(2) The following word does not take okurigana.

また

(3) As illustrated below, words that include other [related] words, follow the okurigana pattern of the included word. [In the examples below] the included words are shown in parenthesis.

Examples:

あわて〔併せる〕 至って〔至る〕 恐らく〔恐れる〕 従って〔従う〕 絶えず〔絶える〕 例えば〔例える〕 努めて〔努める〕
かろじて〔辛い〕 少なくとも〔少ない〕
互いに〔互い〕
必ずしも〔必ず〕
Recurring Pattern

Similar to General Rule 2, when an inflected form or something similar to an inflected form is included, the word follows the included (inflected) word's okurigana behavior. Again, this is to aimed to make the syllables represented by the kanji similar.
